In The News - Janurary 2012

Yay! Something to spice up my blog :) I've come up with a few new ideas for my blog and this is one of them. At the end of every month, I will gather a few nature related articles (at most 5) showcasing the good and bad news happening around the world. So, here is my first edition for Janurary 2012. Enjoy!

Good news.

New baby jaguars were unveiled at Nicaragua's National Zoo. Only three weeks old, Bulni, is a cheeky little Jaguar. When she is fully grown, she will join the family tree of big cats, behind the tiger and lion.

At the Ocean Aquarium in Yantai, PengPeng, their five-year-old Polar bear, has given birth to a female cub on Janurary 1. She was also the first female polar bear cub to be born at the aquarium.

On Borneo Island, Malaysia, wildlife officers were able to rescue a pygmy elephant calf after he became stuck in a deep moat. The male calf is less then one month old. According to authorities, there is less than 2,000 Borneo pygmy elephants left in the wild, and hope that a planned sanctuary would protect the endangered animals.

Bad News.
Giraffe hunters pay up to $20,000 to shoot giraffes for sport. A couple in Britain, have posed for a Kodak moment with their young children beside the giraffe they had just killed for sport.

For some hunters, the photo is the purpose of the hunting expedition. They can also legally hunt elephants. The giraffe population has almost halved since 1988.

Quoted from the Daily Mail article, Dr Fennessy, a conversationalist who is fighting for the protecion of giraffes says that 'If the tourist has paid the fee for the trophy, the carcass is theirs. Some just like to have photo taken next to the dead giraffe, but others pay taxidermists to mount the head a neck so they can take them home as a souvenir. Or they might want to take the skin home.

Overall, even if the efforts of conversationalists can bring positive effects to near dying species, more and more beloved species are become endangered and are under threat of extinction. If we do nothing but sit around, these animals which we so dearly love and are fascinated by will very quickly disappear. Help spread the word or even donate, no matter how big or SMALL the gesture, every one counts and helps the survival of these beautiful animals.
